Beautifully crafted story of guilt and restitution

Lee Chang-Dong, S. Korea, 2011, 133 mins.

Suggested by an audience member, this is perhaps a masterpiece. A woman in her sixties who works as a part-time maid lives alone with her gransdon, who has been involved in serious wrongdoing leading to a girl's suicide. She meets the fathers of other boys who were involved, who plan to raise enough money to satisfy the bereaved parents. Not only does she not have the money, she cannot see this as the right response. How can she make amends? How can she do what is best for her grandson? Her answers emerge as she continues her daily life and attends a poetry evening-class.
