The Truman Show

Witty satire on media illusions and the surveillance state

Peter Weir 1998, USA, 103 mins.

A clever film in which it gradually dawns on Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) that he has spent his whole life as the star of a reality television show which is broadcast worldwide, 24 hours a day. His town is a stage set inside a vast man-made dome, his friends and neighbours are actors and every event of his life has been shaped or scripted by a totalitarian producer in Hollywood. The story pits Truman’s desire to figure out what is going on against the efforts of those around him to persuade him to forget his doubts, and reaches a fitting conclusion.
