Zorba the Greek

Award-winning classic with superb story and sountrack

Michael Cacoyannis 1964, 136 mins.

Based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, the film tells the story of a slightly uptight Englishman (Alan Bates) who travels to investigate a mine he has inherited on Crete where he meets the roguish old Greek peasant Zorba (Anthony Quinn).

One strand of the plot deals with the pair’s doomed attempts to regenerate the mine; another covers the relationship Zorba pursues with an ageing French courtesan while the Bates character falls in love with a young widow.

Through these storylines we see the friendship of the men develop (“You've got everything except one thing”, says Zorba at one point, “Madness! A man needs a little madness”), gain unsettling insights into the harsh culture of the islanders and enjoy the world's best bouzouki tune!
