Eat Drink Man Woman

Entertaining film with themes of love and food

Ang Lee 1994, Taiwan, 124 mins.

An earlier work by the director of Sense and Sensibility (1995), Brokeback Mountain (2006) and Life of Pi (2012), this gentle and often funny film traces the love lives of a widowed chef and his three daughters all amid the steam of apparently continuous Chinese cooking -- a treat for the eyes and almost the taste-buds too. Set in Taiwan, in Mandarin with Englsih sub-titles.

“A veritable smorgasbord of all the things that make life worthwhile” (reviewer on IMDB)

“I simply adored this movie. The characters are so real, you see them warts and all. Their idiosynchrocies, quirks, talents, loves, etc. are all exposed to the point where you love every character.” (user review on Amazon)

“touching yet hilarious screenplay” (user review on Amazon)

“A bit like a Chinese version of Woody Allen's ‘Hannah and Her Sisters’, the film traverses the lives of three sisters and their father. Lee manages to tell each character's story with care and humor. There are some hearty laughs, a number of touching dramatic moments, and towards the end even a couple of startling twists.” (user review on Amazon
