In Love with Alma Cogan

Delightful comedy set in Cromer

In Love with Alma Cogan

Tony Britten 2011, UK, 99 mins.

With Roger Lloyd-Pack, Niamh Cusack

A gentle comedy-drama in the mould of Little Voice and Local Hero, Tony Britten’s film revolves around the declining fortunes of a pier theatre in the run-down seaside resort of Cromer. (It's not run-down in real life, of course!) Theatre manager Norman (Roger Lloyd-Pack, much loved in TV’s Only Fools and Horses and The Vicar of Dibley) clings to past glories, particularly to the ghost of 1960s singing star Alma Cogan, whom he once met. He eventually decides to leave behind the relics of a bygone entertainment era and help his long-suffering but devoted assistant Sandra (Niamh Cusack) to achieve her ambition of becoming a professional singer, unexpectedly enjoying a late-blossoming romance in the process.
